Benefits of Participating in Day Habilitation

Through our day habilitation programs in Maryland, many in our community have the opportunity to direct the support they want to chart their future and achieve their goals. Day habilitation programs promote independence and community integration by helping people advocate for the lives they want, assisted by physical, occupational, or speech therapies as listed in their person-centered plan.

Day habilitation services help people be a part of their community and have access to and enjoy the opportunities around them. These services are flexible and can be provided almost anywhere in the community. These programs help people develop the necessary skills to pursue their goals and interests.

When appropriate, these programs also address personal care and daily living support residents need to be able to live more independently at home. These functional life skills help many of our participants learn to live on their own or with less support at home.

Participants also learn work readiness through our vocational training program, which prepares them for supported employment. Participants role-play and discuss job scenarios, receive travel training to their worksites, and have the opportunity to work in an internship situation in a community environment. By gaining real-world work experience in a supportive center, many of our participants are able to transition into community-based employment.

Day Habilitation Activity Calendar

While there is no “typical day” in day habilitation, each person’s day is designed based on his/her individual needs and interests; each day brings new experiences and opportunities for growth, independence, and integration.

Daily activities in our day habilitation program may include:

  • Computer work
  • Exercise
  • Gardening
  • ADL skills training
  • Volunteering
  • Job skill development

One of the great benefits of the day habilitation program is the opportunity for volunteering. Over the last few years, our program has promoted civic involvement to integrate people within the community.

With a focus on volunteerism, community inclusion, and functional life skills, Providence offers job training and supported employment that provide the skills needed to achieve greater independence.

What kinds of activities are included in a day habilitation program?

Day habilitation programs are tailored to the needs of the people who attend. Activities may include craft classes and games, clubs, community outings, pet therapy, and employment training. In addition, programs will focus on teaching personal care and daily living skills that individuals need to live as independently as possible.

How can I find a good day habilitation program?

Day habilitation programs should treat the people in their care with dignity and respect. They also should be focused on building usable skills, including personal care skills and daily living skills. Finally, a good program should be built on the idea of inclusion, which is the belief that every person has the right to be included in society.

What are the benefits of a day habitation program?

Day habilitation provides a number of activities for participants, and most focus on socialization and life or employment skills. Participants are given the freedom to explore things that are interesting to them while receiving support from caring caregivers. It is a safe environment but also an environment focused on building skills for independent living.

Will day habilitation programs provide for clinical or medical needs?

Our program is designed to promote independence and community integration. As such, participants can receive their physical, occupational, or speech therapies at our clinic. Staff is also aware of medical needs and strives to meet those needs when possible or coordinate medical care outside of Providence when appropriate.
