Greenhouses

Providence Greenhouses

Providence Greenhouses focus on wholesale production of native plants. We use environmentally-friendly growing practices to grow a wide variety of true Maryland ecotypes at reasonable costs. Seasonal retail offerings are also available. Our Greenhouses also provide employment opportunities for people we support. Our Greenhouses team members are continuously gaining in-depth knowledge of horticulture and commercial nursery practices, and building professional skills for community employment.

You can help support our mission by placing a grow order or shopping our seasonal retail sales. Every purchase supports our mission of helping people learn, grow, and build the full lives they want within their communities.

Environmental Restoration in the Chesapeake Bay Region

Our Greenhouses contribute to our community through important environmental restoration projects, including the rebuilding of Poplar Island in the Chesapeake Bay. By participating in our horticulture program, people at Providence are making the environment a greener, happier place.

Commercial Plant Growers for Maryland

Providence Greenhouses have worked with many well-known organizations and companies in Maryland to meet their large-scale commercial growing needs, including the Army Corps of Engineers, Dominion Energy, Anne Arundel Community College, Maryland Department of Natural Resources, and Maryland Therapeutic Riding. These meaningful partnerships are vital for Providence’s continued growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are your hours?

We are primarily wholesale growers and do not maintain open hours. We would still love to see you! You may shop retail with us during our public sales events a couple times a year.

Who can place a wholesale order?

Anyone representing a business, organization, or provable community project. Orders are always filled by the flat, not by individual plant count.

Who can place a grow order?

Anyone who needs counts of 50 plants or more per species needed for natives, and 18 or more per variety of vegetable start.

Who can buy plants for themselves?

Anyone who attends our public sales at our greenhouses. You can also purchase our plants from one of our growing list of retailers! Please visit Cape Ace Hardware, Crofton Ace Hardware, Green Valley Marketplace in Bay Dale and Park Hardware for spring veggies or hanging baskets!

What are your sustainability practices?

We are neonicotinoid-free and use a pest management program that takes the environment and the health of our people we support into full consideration. We are also implementing bio-control methods, meaning releasing predators into our greenhouses to eat the pests! We reuse plastic pots as much as possible and are committed to making sure our discarded plant material gets to the county composting facility. We are always looking for the next practical way to increase our sustainability and welcome comments.

How can we get a person we love involved in your program to be supported or employed with your team?

Providence of Maryland first needs to be a service provider for your loved one in order for them to secondarily become employed in the greenhouses. The first step would be to contact our admissions at admissions@providenceofmaryland.org.

What is a day-to-day like for your team/ what are they learning to do?

Our team is the engine behind our production schedule and cranking out your orders! They work hard in ways that is meaningful to them, and the tasks they are given are based on their unique strengths. Our team activity works on their workplace skills such as teamwork, leadership, and accountability. Their technical skills are honed everyday while learning and practicing planting seeds & plugs, keeping correct labels, pulling orders, fertilizing, spraying light oils and soaps, recognizing plant problem signs, and customer service during public sales. We focus on growing native plants and veggie starts as these are fantastic plants to learn about as they grow. This makes room for continual educational moments about the environment and our connection to it.

Do you have landscaping services?

Our Greenhouses team does not provide landscaping services. We encourage you to contact our friends at Maryland Reentry Resource Center who have a powerful mission and a working landscaping team. Call them at 410-429-0107.

Do you take donations of plastic pots?

If you bought it from us - Yes! Those are the sizes we grow in best to keep up with being a production grower. If you didn't buy it from us, it's okay! Just know we will accept 1 gallons, 6" rounds, anything that seems like a "quart", and the bottom flats that go with them! We also take plug trays. Anything else, we ask you to take to Home Depot or Lowes where they have "Metrolina" carts designated to take plastic pots back to their Metrolina facilities and recycle them!

Do you still grow flowers?

Yes, we have specialized in our awesome spring hanging baskets and blooming companion plant starts for vegetable gardens. We do not typically grow flats of annuals for sale.

Do you overwinter tropical/houseplants for individuals?

Unfortunately, combining many people’s houseplants creates pest problems, and many individuals have different views on pest treatment and how they want their pest to be treated. Therefore, we do not offer overwintering plants for individuals.
