Our History
Providing Services and Support to People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, Their Families, and the Community Since 1961
In 1961, Providence was founded to serve the important and exclusive needs of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It was the first such center in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, where Providence is headquartered.
Fifteen years later, in 1975, when the Equal Education Law was passed that allowed children with developmental disabilities to attend special education classes in public schools, Providence refocused its services to adults. Today it serves nearly 500 individuals at four locations in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.
Since 1975, Providence has continued to evolve in order to meet the changing needs of those it serves. We now feature a range of programs and services that include a supported employment program, art programs, comprehensive activity programs, unique vocational training programs in pottery, woodworking, horticulture and landscaping, a seniors programs, and transportation services.
Providence has been leading the way in person-centered planning, tailoring programs around the unique needs and goals of each individual, encouraging them to be active in managing their day-to-day lives and designing their own futures.
