Athletic Performance, Inc. to Host Tennis Tournament to Benefit Providence, Offers Lessons for Developmentally-Disabled Adults
Glen Burnie – Athletic Performance, Inc. (API) is hosting a Senior Men’s Singles tennis tournament on November 4, 2012 to benefit Providence, a non-profit organization that serves adults with developmental disabilities. Funds raised will support Providence’s dynamic programs and services that help nearly 500 men and women chart their path in life, gain independence and find meaningful roles in their community. The tournament will be held at API’s facilities, located at 740 MD Route 3 South, Gambrills, MD 21054. Players must be 50 years or older. The cost for members will be $50, $60 for nonmembers. To sign up call: 410-923-2100.
As part of this effort, API has invited Providence participants to take two free tennis lessons under the direction of Peggy Machoian, API’s Tennis Director and coordinator of the organization’s charitable tennis tournament.
The first lesson was held on October 4th, for four Providence participants who were eager to show Machoian their skills on the court. Louise Colbert, Steve Klob, Joey Payton, and Jennifer Ross learned basic tennis skills like hand-eye coordination. Enthusiastic about his opportunity to play tennis for the first time, Steve Klob said, “Tennis is my favorite sport to watch and I was happy that I had a chance to show what I know about tennis.”
Machoian’s motivation for doing this tournament stemmed from her organization’s commitment to its community and her personal inclination to give back. “The staff at API are proud to support Providence’s vital work. I am happy to be part of this effort to raise funds for the organization and to be personally working with such a great group of individuals, exposing them to the game of tennis.”
Providence, a non-profit organization based in Anne Arundel County, operates five facilities which provide care and training in programs such as Horticulture, Woodshop, and Pottery throughout the county. It meets the growing needs of nearly 500 individuals through an array of services and supports, including medical supervision and care, psychological assistance, skills training for activities of daily living, vocational training and job placement as well as retirement services.
The mission of Providence is to provide services that allow individuals with disabilities to enjoy increased self-determination in leading a more independent, valuable and functioning role in society. These support services are individually designed and professionally managed to enable these individuals to exercise higher levels of control over their lives.
