“The Hero in All of Us” Event Nets $44,000 for Providence’s Programs and Services

Glen Burnie – Providence, a non-profit organization that serves adults with developmental disabilities, announced today that its “The Hero in All of Us” event on Thursday raised more than $44,000, funds that will directly support the organization’s programs, services, and clients. “The Hero in All of Us” was held at the Loews Hotel in Annapolis. The event’s Honorary Chairs were Jay and Colleen Baldwin.

The event honored unsung heroes that are assisting Providence in advancing its mission of service. Honorees included: John Stierhoff, a respected attorney with Venable LLP that has performed hundreds of hours of pro bono service to the organization; Rosemary Elger, Providence’s Director of Self-Advocacy that has worked with the organization for nearly 30 years and has overseen its transition to community-based services and integrating clients with the communities in which they live; Dorothy and Stephen Constants, who have become invaluable volunteers at the Center’s Pottery Studio in addition to expanding the organization’s network of support, including the recent partnership between Providence and Wegmans of Waugh Chapel; and Krystle Powell, a Providence client that is achieving more independence in her life, from common household tasks like planning and cooking a dinner for her family and using a coin-operated laundry to successfully turning her volunteer position into a paid job.

In all, nearly 250 people celebrated the organization’s commitment to those with developmental disabilities and those individuals that were highlighted for their often-quiet contributions to Providence, its mission, and the individuals it serves.

Providence Executive Director Chuck Coble said in a statement, “We are so grateful for everyone that came out to support Providence’s dynamic mission and services,” Coble said. “The fact is that we consider our participants true heroes for facing challenges head on each day and, by extension, so are those that support us so that we can do the work we do.”

Providence, a non-profit organization based in Anne Arundel County, operates five facilities which provide care and training in programs such as Horticulture, Woodshop, and Pottery throughout the county. It meets the growing needs of nearly 500 individuals through an array of services and supports, including medical supervision and care, psychological assistance, skills training for activities of daily living, vocational training and job placement as well as retirement services.

The mission of Providence is to provide services that allow individuals with disabilities to enjoy increased self-determination in leading a more independent, valuable and functioning role in society. These support services are individually designed and professionally managed to enable these individuals to exercise higher levels of control over their lives.
